What’s Catching Our Eye
Jurassic Park IRL? The controversial genetics startup Colossal has claimed to bring back the dire wolf from 12,000 years of extinction. They have their eyes on ‘resurrecting’ the wooly mammoth and the dodo next. Want something a little less sci-fi? The original brood of 17-year cicadas return to the East Coast in late April and early May. Snap pictures of them with the free app Cicada Safari, which helps experts learn more about their cycles.
Out with the Old. E-bikes are rising in popularity among the Ohio Amish, prompting debate for those who reject using cars for religious reasons and its effects on family life. Thankfully, Wirecutter doesn’t list them on items you might want to snag before tariffs raise prices.
Sounds Scammy to Me. A thriving local bank in Kansas went bankrupt when its CEO was lured into investing the bank’s wealth into cryptocurrency. The podcast Scam Inc from The Economist follows the phenomenon of “pig-butchering scams” and how this billion-dollar global industry targets wealthy and lonely individuals in America.
