What’s Catching Our Eye
Are We Lonely or Just Anti-Social? The Atlantic’s Derek Thompson parses out the difference in his fantastic piece, “The Anti-Social Century;” and his colleague, Faith Hill, responds to it in “The Myth of the Loneliness Epidemic.” Russell Moore offers a helpful encouragement to keep gathering in episode 145 of The Russell Moore Show: “How a Book Club Helped Me to Live and to Die.” Start a book club, and you may just rediscover the bonds of friendship.
May I Ask Who’s Calling? Donald Trump appears to be a difficult guy to engage on the phone these days, but Newsweek reports he’s working hard to get Russian President Vladimir Putin on the line. If even the thought of phone calls makes you squirm, you’re probably a Millennial or younger. Research says you may be avoiding phone calls altogether. Want help? This year, Nottingham College in the U.K. has introduced a new course to help students dial and answer.
Pack Your Bags; Let’s Go to Greenland! This past fall, Nuuk, the capital city of Greenland opened its first international airport prompting the popular travel advisor, Fodor’s to muse, “Is Greenland About to Become a Tourism Hot Spot?” While we’re not sure Greenland is bursting with visitors this time of year, the island has garnered the attention of President Donald Trump who hopes to expand American interests there. This week, Foreign Affairs journalist Paul Hockenos explains why Europe might like increased U.S. presence on the island. While Paul McLeary and Robbie Gramer over at Politico argue that there’s little new to gain: the president already has pretty much all he could want there.
Dive Deeper
In the first week of his second term as president, Donald Trump pardoned 1,500 individuals who had participated in the January 6 riot on the Capitol.
Here’s how you can understand this headline better …
Listen to Episode 136 with veteran radio host Charlie Sykes for a reflection the events of January 6, 2021 and why they tested American democracy in a way we’ve never experienced before.
Read CT political correspondent Harvest Prude’s recollection of her experience as a journalist trapped in the House chambers on January 6: “What It Was Like to Be Inside the Capitol on January 6,” The Dispatch.
Read about and listen to Russell Moore’s conversation with former vice president Mike Pence about his first meeting with Donald Trump since they parted ways in 2021. (If you recall, rioters outside the Capitol chanted “Hang Mike Pence” beside a makeshift gallows.) If you’re looking for an example of grace and forgiveness, you’ll find it displayed beautifully here.
